President Joe Biden spent his Earth Day in a national forest this year with an explicit pitch to young people: a climate jobs corps intended to excite Gen Z the way John F. Kennedy's Peace Corps inspired their grandparents. He also signed  the biggest climate bill in American history in 2022 — to ignite the renewable energy revolution. But Biden isn't reaping the political benefits among young voters.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has approved legislation allowing the death penalty in child rape convictions. The change was championed by the Republican-controlled Statehouse despite concerns that the U.S. Supreme Court has banned capital punishment in such cases. Lee, a Republican, quietly signed off on the legislation last week without issuing a statement. The new Tennessee law, which goes into effect July 1, authorizes the state to pursue capital punishment when an adult is convicted of aggravated rape of a child. Those convicted could be sentenced to death, imprisonment for life without possibility of parole, or imprisonment for life.

U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson is assailing the U.S. judicial system as the the highest-level Republican to show up at court with Donald Trump for his hush money trial. The presence of the House leader at Trump’s felony trial in New York on Tuesday serves as a remarkable moment in modern American politics. Johnson is leading his Republican Party against the U.S. system by declaring Trump's felony trial to be a sham. He claims Democrats are trying to hurt Trump's chances in the presidential election. Also with the presumptive GOP nominee on Tuesday were U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum. Republicans are laying the groundwork to potentially challenge the 2024 election results.

Rory McIlroy has filed for divorce in a stunning development as the PGA Championship nears. Court records in Palm Beach County, Florida, showed the petition for dissolution of marriage against Erica Stoll was filed Monday. That's one day after McIlroy won the Wells Fargo Championship for his 26th career PGA Tour victory. McIlroy's management team confirms the divorce filing and says he won't comment to make sure this time is respectful and amicable. The petition for divorce described the marriage as irretrievably broken and asked that a prenuptial agreement signed about a month before their 2017 wedding be enforced. The prenuptial agreement was sealed.
